TGIO - by Han

8th Sep 2005
A very memorable day.
Kent Ridge Hall TGIO
Thank God It’s Over

After the conclusion of my hall’s Inter block games, it is traditional for the hall band to perform a gig, more well known as Thank God Its Over (TGIO). Well, in case YOU don’t know, yeah I’m in the hall band. Kent Ridge Hall Rockers. Yeah baby. Lol

This year’s theme was HAIR TO THE THRONE (heir … hair, gettit?). In any case, my chairman decided that we would do seriously outlandish hairdos for this gig. So there were 4 bands, in this order: Funk, 80s Hair Metal, BritPop and Punk. If you know me, it’s an easy guess which band I was in. It was the perfect fit ! heh. Oh and there was also the customary finale band, where all the male singers would come out and perform a song, and the female singers come out and do another song.

Funk
-----

Yup the funk band. Cool shit aren’t they.

YES !! we got the best hairdos !! literally. I guess cos this year, my hall’s not gonna have a Dinner and Dance (where we lose our fashion sense and inhibitions for 1 night and dress REALLY outlandishly) , yeah so we rockers bunch decided to spend big for this performance. Each wig cost about $20 for 3 days rental (after much bargaining…) but I truly think it was well worth the effort.

Anyways on to the performance.

The bands performed outside the hall lobby. Cool lighting I thought. Anyways, funk were the 1st up, their set included Stevie Wonder’s Superstitious, Killing me Softly, RESPECT (by the great Aretha Franklin) and Kung Fu fighting. Heh. I think Lin’s (my chairperson and guy in middle in this pic) voice has really improved since last year. Glad to see each other up our own areas of expertise =)

New singer this year, who also happen to be my date for hall dating game … Shili. OMG. I thought for a moment Aretha was brought back to life. Real powerhouse of a voice ! Vic the only guitarist in this band, also one of KR all stars guitarists ever. Heh. Really good blues player, and shows his hand at doing funk as well. As the Beach Boys would have put it , this band had the Good Vibrations. Hah

BTW, a special mention to the committee who mic-ed up all our amps, so that our volumes and tones were not left to the hands of fate. In other words, we could do 3rd party adjustments to the sound systems instead of the individual musicians running back to our amps to adjust Drive and Tone and Volume and Bass and Treble and Mids etc. I think the sound setup was fantabulous that night.

80s Band
----------

Well If you haven’t guess it right, I’m in this band. Here.

OMFG. U say. Haha.

Left to right. The voice of KR, from Sri Lanka, Surath ! (aka Bryan Adams/ Bon Jovi),
Benjamin Por on Bass, Me, Sherry the Blonde Girl aka Dolly Parton (??), Ian on keys, and Hanrong on Bass.

What a GREEEAAAATTT band this was !

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed all the sessions we had jamming. Heh. BTW, I am NOT a transvestite. I think our wigs were truly the bomb !

This was my entire outfit. I was wearing rock star-ish boots btw. That’s Sherry, who after putting on the wig, acted like a blonde the entire night. Looked and behaved like one. (initially she was so against the idea of being the only blonde. Guess not!) Look at this pic. I don’t think she would ever do that to me again haha. My outfit plus the boots cost me $50 in all ! quite expensive …. But again. How many times can I dress up in this super tight fit leather pants with a hole at the back. I was literally a waterfall inside. So hot! Nice hair right. =)

The band in action. There I am ! looking like Jimmy Page. Haha. Or Kirk Hammet. With my new Fender Strat 92 MIA Floyd Rose Classic (shameless self promotion)! Surath was using my gear as well, Ovation semi-acoustic. I think we were doing Bryan Adams The Only Thing That Looked Good On Me Is You. Other songs that night included Joyride by Roxette, A medley of 80s rock (Belinda Carlisle, Tina Turner, Joan Jett, Whitney Housten etc), and of course the mandatory Bon Jovi number by Surath the man. This time we did I’ll Be There For You. I think it was indeed one of the most memorable songs on the night… the intro was good, the singing was superb, the solo was perfect, the harmony was, hmm, orgasmic! Hah. The crowd loved it much. I absolutely loved it.

After which the MC dangled in with a little Bingo game. Which was quite interesting really heh.

BritPop
--------

Mopheads!

Yeah. Nerd rock / brit pop. They looked damn nerdish don’t they. Cool shit. Oh, CJ’s not in this pic.

My pri sch teacher?

Anyways, this band played mostly brit stuff, Oasis’s Stand By Me (yeah baby), Robbie Williams Radio, Franz Ferdinand among others. Their outfit were really shockers! Not too sure if they paid much to look like that. Probably just dug up their old closet. Heh.

Punk Band
--------------
My worth. This band really rocked the house down (crowd being mostly pop lovers)

Heh my block mate Yijia with the spiky hair courtesy of yours truly. Blasting away to the tunes of Blink 182, Hole, Greenday! Really really great stuffs man. Yijia and YinQiBoo (the girl in skirt) had fantastic on stage presence…. The crowd was banging their heads along to the songs!! Always a sign of a successful gig.

Btw u can catch a glimpse of my strat. There. THERE. Between her legs.

Ok it sounds so wrong.

Finale
-----

The ladies

The men
Well, I played for the men’s finale, we did what the girls did last year. Abba’s dancing queen (rock version!!) I think we look damn funny with all our different outfits coming together.

The mini tragedy.

There I was playing next to Yijia. Then he stepped on my cable and it came off my guitar mid-song. Then kan cheong. Then forget lyrics. Heh. But we learn to put such stuff past us. It was damn fun nonetheless. Dancing queen …………

The girls did September by Earth Wind and Fire…. Ba De Yaaaaa heh.

2 very fantastic finale songs to end the night.

A very memorable night.

The quan jia fu. (family portrait)

Daphne, Eng Kiat ! say come but never come ! what a waste heh.

Special thanks to Lyna who came down n took some pics n vids too. Send me the vids one day k, girl?

There, I don’t look too transvestite w/o my hair right? Right ? RIGHHT??
